How is an individual name control code determined?
The IRS creates name control codes for individuals from the legal name listed on your tax information. Zenefits determines name control codes based on the information employees provide in their profiles.
Valid Characters:
- Numeric (0- 9)
- Alpha (A-Z)
- Hyphen (-)
- Ampersand (&)
Special Rules for Individuals:
- Use the first four characters of the individual’s last name.
Name Control Code Jacob Marley MARL - If a last name has fewer than four characters, use the full last name.
Name Control Code Lucretia Tox TOX - If an individual has a hyphenated last name, use the first four characters from the first of the two last names.
Name Control Code Estella Havisham-Magwitch HAVI - For joint returns, regardless of whether the payees use the same or different last names, use the first four characters of the primary payee's last name.
