What is a fictitous business name?

A Fictitious Business/Doing Business As (DBA) name is a business name that is different from the officially registered name of a company. When a business is first formed, the legal name of the business defaults to the name of the person or entity that owns the business.

A DBA is typically needed for the following scenarios:

  • For Sole Proprietors or Partnerships, if you wish to start a business under anything other than your legal name, you’ll need to register a DBA.
  • For Existing Corporations or LLCs, if you want to do business under a name other than your existing corporation or LLC name, you will need to register a DBA.

Depending on the business's location, registering a DBA is done either with your county clerk’s office or with your state government. There are a few states that do not require the registering of DBA names.

The DBA can be updated in the Company Profile app in the Company Overview section. Select the pencil icon in the General Information section to make the change.
