Shift premiums and multiple pay rates
What are Shift Premiums?
Although there is no federal or state requirement, many companies may opt to pay shift premiums (also called shift differentials in pay) to employees who work certain shifts.
Examples of Shift Premiums
-
Working overnight shit
-
Working outside of normal business hours
-
Working on your day off
Example: A company might pay assembly workers $10.00 per hour for the 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. shift, $11.00 per hour for the 4:00 p.m. to midnight shift, and $12.00 per hour for the shift from midnight to 8:00 am.
** Shift premiums must be included when determining a regular rate of pay for overtime**
