Registering for City Income Taxes in Michigan

Several cities in Michigan have their own local income tax, which is paid by employees who live and work in these cities.

  • Here's a list of cities with local taxes, and links to registration instructions in each city. Many require paper forms for registration. Employers should register in each individual city where at least one employee lives or works.
  • Each city has a separate resident and non-resident rate. Generally, the rates are 1% for residents and 0.5% for non residents, but some such as Detroit and Grand Rapids, have unique rates.
